AI Upscaling Will Not Save Your Logo

Upscalers hallucinate plausible pixels, and plausible is a synonym for wrong when the exact curve of your R is the brand. Myths, retired.

There is a hopeful email every designer and print vendor knows by heart. It contains a logo as a 400-pixel JPEG, screenshotted from a website, sometimes with a corner of the navigation still attached, and a request to put it on a banner. And lately it contains a new twist: "we ran it through an AI upscaler, so it should be fine now." It is not fine now. It is a larger version of not fine.

What upscaling actually does

A raster image is a grid of colored squares. When the original was exported at 400 pixels, every curve and letterform was flattened into that grid, and the information about the true shapes was thrown away. AI upscalers do not recover that information. They hallucinate plausible detail: statistically likely pixels, invented by a model that has never seen your actual mark. For a photograph of a forest, hallucinated leaves are harmless. For a logo, where the exact curve of your R is the brand, plausible is a synonym for wrong. Edges waver, corners round themselves, letterforms thicken into almost-your-font. At banner size, almost is very visible.

The myths, refusing to die

  • "We have it in high resolution." Resolution is not the issue. A 4000-pixel JPEG is still a grid of squares, still un-editable, still doomed at billboard scale. The issue is raster versus vector.
  • "Just vectorize it." Auto-tracing a compressed raster produces lumpy curves faithfully wrapped around JPEG artifacts. A human redraw can work, but that is recreating the logo, billed accordingly, with accuracy depending on how degraded the source is.
  • "The AI version looks sharp." Sharp is not accurate. Crisp edges in the wrong places are the most professional-looking way to be off-brand.
An upscaler cannot remember what your logo looked like. It can only imagine what a logo like yours might look like. Those are different marks.

The actual fix is administrative

Somewhere, a vector original probably exists: with the original designer, in an old email, inside a forgotten zip. Finding it, or paying once for a faithful redraw, and then storing SVG, EPS, and PDF masters in a place people can actually find, ends this problem permanently. The recurring upscaling ritual is not a technology gap. It is a filing gap wearing a technology costume.
